The Third House

In Carson City, lobbyists are called the Third House: the chamber nobody elects. This page follows its money. These are the patterns, coincidences and oddities buried in Nevada's 2026 campaign filings: who funds both parties, who gives the maximum several times over, who is funding their own run, and how many ways one company's name can be misspelled.

Every number comes from the candidates' own reports, January 2025 through June 30, 2026, and links back to the page where you can check it.

The utilities fund the people who write their rules

$402,375

from Southwest Gas and NV Energy to 53 campaigns: 34 Democrats and 19 Republicans

Southwest Gas gave $205,075 to 43 campaigns. NV Energy, filing as NV Energy, Nevada Power and Sierra Pacific, gave $197,300 to 44. Biggest recipients:

Nicole Cannizzaro · Attorney General$40K
Joe Lombardo · Governor$32K
Erica Mosca · Assembly District 14$20K
Steven Horsford · U.S. House NV-4$18K
Marilyn Dondero Loop · Senate District 8$15K
Max Carter II · Assembly District 12$15K
Ryan Hampton · Assembly District 9$12K
Erica Roth · Assembly District 24$12K

Fair reading: Both companies are regulated monopolies whose rates are set under laws the Legislature writes. Giving is legal and routine; it is here because of who is on the receiving end.

Many hats, one day

$140,000

from groups of hotels and companies with shared or related names, each writing the same-size check on the same day

Nevada caps each contributor at $5,000 per election, which is $10,000 across the primary and general combined. The filings list every property below as its own contributor, so a group of them can give many times the cap in a single day. Cisco Aguilar's Oct 30 haul was 11 checks of $10,000 ($110,000), four of them from companies named National Material or NM Holding. Several names from that group also appear on Aaron Ford's and Nicole Cannizzaro's donor lists.

Politicians funding politicians

$1,135,766

moved from 125 campaign and leadership committees to other candidates

Candidates' own campaign committees and leadership PACs are some of the biggest donors in the state. Friends of Toby Yurek alone gave $99,000 to 14 Republicans. The Committee to Elect Erica Mosca wrote checks to 20 Democrats.

Friends of Toby Yurek$99,00014R

Fair reading: Caucus leaders spreading money to their team is normal in every legislature. It also means a handful of incumbents help decide which newcomers can afford to run. Matched on committee names; a candidate's money to their own campaign is excluded.

Three months, $1.33 million

$1,332,071

spent by Nicole Cannizzaro's attorney general campaign from April through June, about 3.9 times what it spent in the previous fifteen months combined

Jan to Mar 2026 (Report 1)$101K
Apr to Jun 2026 (Report 2)$1.33M

Fair reading: The June 9 primary fell inside this window, and heavy spending before a primary is normal. It is here because of the scale and what it left in the bank for November.

How this was built

Findings are computed from the same data as the Governor, Statewide, U.S. House and Legislature pages: FEC filings for Congress and Nevada Secretary of State contribution and expense reports for everyone else, through June 30, 2026, with a few campaigns that already filed their July–September report. Donors are grouped by their name as filed, after removing punctuation and words like LLC and Inc., so the same donor spelled two ways is counted twice. Every count is a floor, not a ceiling.

"Fair reading" notes say what each pattern does and does not show. None of these findings is an allegation that anyone broke the law. Corrections: message GOP Watch NV on Facebook and we will fix verified errors quickly.
